Who this route is for

Long-term residents who want unlimited permanent status; faster tracks exist for Blue Card holders, skilled workers and graduates.

Eligibility requirements

  • Generally 5 years of legal residence (shorter for Blue Card holders, skilled workers and Germany-trained graduates)
  • B1 German (CEFR) and a passed 'Life in Germany' integration test
  • Secured livelihood and adequate health/pension provision for the household
  • At least 60 months of statutory pension contributions (or equivalent) in most cases
  • Adequate housing for the family and clean criminal record
