Frequently asked questions
Is 65 points enough?
65 is the minimum to be placed in the SkillSelect pool — it does not guarantee an invitation. Because invitations are issued highest-score-first, the competitive score for most occupations is now 85–95+. Treat 65 as the floor, not the target.
How is work experience counted?
Overseas skilled experience scores up to 15 points (8–10 years) and Australian skilled experience up to 20 points (8–10 years). They are assessed separately, but the combined employment total is capped at 20 points. Only experience in your nominated (or closely related) skilled occupation counts.
What counts for the English points?
Competent English (e.g. IELTS 6 each band) scores 0 points but is the eligibility minimum; Proficient (IELTS 7s) scores 10; Superior (IELTS 8s, or PTE 79+) scores 20. PTE, TOEFL iBT and OET are also accepted at equivalent levels.
Do I add state nomination points myself?
Select your target visa and the tool adds them: subclass 190 (state/territory nomination) adds 5 points; subclass 491 (regional or family-sponsored) adds 15 points. Subclass 189 has no nomination points. You can only claim them once nominated.
Is this the official calculator?
No. It’s an independent estimator built from the published points table (reviewed June 2026). Only the Department of Home Affairs assesses your actual points after a skills assessment. Always confirm on immi.homeaffairs.gov.au.
