People in the UK who fear persecution in their home country on grounds such as race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership of a particular social group.
Eligibility requirements
- Must claim asylum in person, in the UK or at the border, as soon as reasonably possible.
- Show a well-founded fear of persecution and that the home state cannot protect you (Refugee Convention) or that you face serious harm (humanitarian protection).
- No application fee; legal aid may be available.
- Cannot work while a claim is pending (limited exceptions after 12 months).
- If granted, normally 5 years' permission, then a route to settlement; separate bespoke schemes exist for Ukraine, Hong Kong BN(O), and Afghan relocations.
